Schloss Ort in Gmunden: What to See Inside the Lake Castle

Sitting on a tiny island in Lake Traunsee, Schloss Ort is easily Gmunden’s most iconic landmark. The historic castle is connected to the shore by a wooden bridge, with the mountains surrounding the lake creating a pretty spectacular backdrop.

Austrian and German visitors might also recognise it from the TV series Schlosshotel Orth, which was filmed here from 1996 to 2004. Despite the name, it’s not really a hotel, but you can visit the castle and its small museum.

I paid the €5 entrance fee during my summer visit to Gmunden and explored the exhibitions inside. In this guide, I’ll share what there is to see, whether I think going inside is worth it and everything you need to know before visiting Schloss Ort.

Is Schloss Ort Worth Visiting?

Yes, Schloss Ort is absolutely worth visiting, at least from the outside. Its location on a tiny island in Lake Traunsee makes it one of the prettiest spots in Gmunden, and walking across the wooden bridge to the castle is part of the experience.

Whether it’s worth paying €5 to go inside is another question. Personally, I didn’t find the museum particularly exciting, especially as much of the information was only available in German.

I’d still pay to go inside if you’re interested in the castle’s history or want to explore the courtyard. Otherwise, I’d spend more time enjoying the castle and lake views.

What Can You See at Schloss Ort for Free?

You don’t need a museum ticket to enjoy the setting of Schloss Ort. You can walk across the wooden bridge to the island and even walk once around the outside of the castle.

You can also get a peek into the courtyard without paying. For many visitors, especially if you’re mainly coming for the beautiful setting and photos, this will probably be enough.

I’d still recommend walking all the way over to the castle rather than only photographing it from the shore in the town center. Walking across the picturesque bridge makes the 20min walk to get there from the center worth it.

There’s also a small cafe, so you can enjoy a drink with views right on the small island with the castle on it.

What Is Inside Schloss Ort?

To see the inside of Schloss Ort you have to pay an entrance fee of €5. Inside you see:

  • The courtyard: This was one of my favourite parts of going inside. You can walk around the first floor arcade and enjoy views down into the historic courtyard.
  • The Wassermarke: Keep an eye out for the small flood level markings on one of the courtyard walls. They show how high the water reached during past floods, and I was shocked by just how much of the castle must have been underwater.
  • The history exhibition: The ground floor covers the history of Schloss Ort and some of the people connected to it. Unfortunately, the English information was inconsistent, with many displays only available in German.
  • The chapel: There’s also a small chapel inside. It’s nothing spectacular, but I found the old wall paintings interesting.
  • The wedding rooms: Schloss Ort is still used for weddings and events. I couldn’t enter these rooms during my visit, but you can peek inside through the glass doors.
  • Temporary exhibitions: When I visited, there was an exhibition about the nearby mountain Traunstein. I particularly enjoyed seeing how climbing equipment has changed over time and learning that Empress Sisi was the first woman to climb the mountain.

Tips for Visiting Schloss Ort

  • Entrance fee: When I visited in 2026 entrance was €5 to visit the inside.
  • Opening season: In 2026, Schloss Ort is open from 11 April to 26 October.
  • Opening hours: Monday to Sunday from 10:30 am to 4 pm. Opening hours can change, so check the latest information before your visit.
  • How long you need: I spent about one hour exploring Schloss Ort. Allow a little longer if you want to sit down for a drink or spend more time taking photos.
  • Getting there: Schloss Ort is around a 20 minute walk from the centre of Gmunden. The walk along Lake Traunsee is lovely, so I’d recommend walking if you can.
  • Food and drinks: There’s no café inside the castle, but you’ll find a restaurant on the island outside the paid area.
  • Toilets: There are toilets inside Schloss Ort.

Why Is Schloss Ort Famous?

Today, many international and younger visitors probably just know Schloss Ort for its beautiful setting on a tiny island in Lake Traunsee.

For many Austrian and German visitors, it’s also famous as the setting of the TV series Schlosshotel Orth, which ran from 1996 to 2004. But the building was never actually a hotel. Today, it’s a museum and event venue.

But Schloss Ort’s history goes back much further than television. It’s one of the oldest buildings in the Salzkammergut and has had plenty of interesting residents over the centuries.

There’s even a local legend about its beginnings. According to the story, the giant Erla built Schloss Ort out of love for Blondchen, a mermaid who lived in Lake Traunsee.

Don’t Skip Schlosspark

Right next to Schloss Ort, Schlosspark is worth a stroll before or after your visit. It’s a large green park beside Lake Traunsee, and events are regularly held here during the warmer months.

In summer, there are also several spots where you can get into the lake for free. The water stays shallow for quite a long way, so it’s particularly nice if you just want to cool of your feet a bit rather than go for a proper swim.

I’d definitely leave some extra time for the park rather than visiting Schloss Ort and immediately heading back into Gmunden.

Explore More of Gmunden

Once you’ve visited Schloss Ort, don’t head straight home.

There’s plenty more to see around Gmunden, from strolling along the Lake Traunsee promenade and browsing the town’s famous ceramics to swimming in the lake or heading up Grünberg.

I especially recommend leaving some time to simply wander around the old town and enjoy the lake. Gmunden is at its best when you don’t rush from one attraction to the next.
