Is Klagenfurt Worth Visiting? Here’s Who Will Love It

If you’re hoping for a city packed with world class museums, grand architecture and endless sightseeing, Klagenfurt probably isn’t the right destination for you.

But if you want to combine a charming old town with one of Austria’s most beautiful lakes or use the city as a base for exploring Carinthia, then Klagenfurt is absolutely worth visiting.

I’ve visited Klagenfurt several times in both summer and winter, and while the city itself isn’t my favourite in Austria, I keep coming back for its relaxed atmosphere, easy train connections and, most importantly, beautiful Lake Wörthersee.

In this guide, I’ll help you decide whether Klagenfurt is the right destination for your trip based on your interests.

Why Klagenfurt Is Worth Visiting

Lake Wörthersee Is the Main Reason to Visit

For me, Lake Wörthersee is the biggest reason to visit Klagenfurt. With its crystal clear turquoise water, it’s one of the most beautiful lakes in Austria and somewhere I always look forward to returning to.

The best part is that it’s only a short bus ride from the city centre, making it easy to combine a morning exploring Klagenfurt’s old town with an afternoon by the lake.

Whether you want to go for a swim, relax on the beach, take a boat trip or simply enjoy the views, there’s plenty to do. You can read all about it, in my guide to Lake Wörthersee.

Great Base for Exploring Carinthia

Klagenfurt is also a good base if you’re planning to see more of Carinthia. It’s well connected by train and bus, making it easy to visit destinations across eastern and central Carinthia.

I also like how easy it is to get around without a car. The old town is just a short walk from the train station, while regular buses connect the city centre with Lake Wörthersee and other nearby attractions.

If you’re planning to explore the far west of Carinthia, however, I’d probably choose a different base.

Charming Old Town

One thing I really enjoy about Klagenfurt is its relaxed old town. With colourful Baroque buildings, lively squares, cosy cafés and plenty of green spaces, it’s a lovely place to spend a few hours wandering around.

That said, I don’t think it’s one of Austria’s most impressive old towns. Cities like Graz and Salzburg have more spectacular architecture and many more sights to keep you busy.

For me, Klagenfurt’s old town works best as part of a wider day out. Spend a few hours exploring, relaxing in one of the parks and sipping a coffee at a local café before heading to nearby Lake Wörthersee.

When Klagenfurt May Not Be Worth Visiting

You Want Lots of Museums and Cultural Attractions

If you love spending your days exploring museums and historic palaces, I’d probably recommend visiting Vienna or Graz instead. Both cities have a much wider range of museums and cultural attractions than Klagenfurt.

That’s not to say Klagenfurt doesn’t have any museums. There are a handful that are worth visiting, including the impressive Großer Wappensaal at the Landhaus and the Museum of Modern Art Carinthia.

But compared to Austria’s larger cities, you’ll run out of museums to visit much more quickly.

You Prefer a Busy City Break

Another reason Klagenfurt might not be the right destination for you is if you prefer a fast-paced city break with endless attractions, shopping and nightlife.

Compared to a city like Vienna Klagenfurt feels tiny. Instead of rushing from one landmark to the next, it’s a place to slow down, enjoy a coffee in the old town, relax in one of the many parks or spend the afternoon by Lake Wörthersee.

Personally, I think that’s exactly what makes Klagenfurt special. But if you’re looking for a packed sightseeing itinerary from morning until night, you’ll probably won’t enjoy Klagenfurt.

How Many Days Do You Need in Klagenfurt?

I think one full day is enough to see the main sights in Klagenfurt, especially if you focus on the old town and a few of the city’s parks. If you enjoy museums, you could easily spend a second day exploring those as well.

That said, I’d recommend staying for a weekend if you can. That gives you enough time to explore Klagenfurt at a relaxed pace and spend a day at nearby Lake Wörthersee without feeling rushed.

I’d only stay longer if you’re planning to use Klagenfurt as a base for exploring more of Carinthia. Thanks to its good public transport connections, it’s an easy starting point for day trips around the region.
