Stunning Admont Abbey Library: Fairy Tale Location in Austria

Admont is a small town tucked away in the Gesäuse National Park, and you’d never guess it’s home to one of the most beautiful libraries in the world—but it is!

I grew up just a 20-minute drive from Admont, and with my sister living there, I’ve had plenty of chances to visit this stunning library, especially when friends from abroad came to visit.

In this post, I’ll share how to get to Admont and give you all the tips you need for visiting the amazing Admont Abbey Library.

How to Get to Admont Abbey Library?

Admont is roughly located in the middle of Vienna, Graz, Linz, and Salzburg—the four biggest cities in Austria—making it accessible from multiple directions.

By car: The easiest and most direct way to get to Admont is by car. There’s a large parking lot right next to the Abbey, and if you’re into hiking, there are some great spots nearby that are also best reached by car.

By public transport: To reach Admont by public transport from major cities you’ll need a combination of train and bus. Depending on where you’re coming from, you’ll need to switch from the train to a local bus at either Selzthal, Liezen, or Stainach-Irdning. From the bus stop in Admont, it’s only a short walk to the Abbey.

Quick History of the Abbey Library in Admont

The Abbey Library was completed in 1776 and is the largest monastery library in the world. Its hall holds around 70,000 books, with a total collection of 200,000 volumes, including 1,400 manuscripts dating back to the 8th century!

But it’s not just the books that make this place special. The library is famous for its stunning Baroque architecture, the seven ceiling frescoes by Bartolomeo Altomonte and intricate statues that line the library hall.

Fun fact: The Benedictine monastery is still active today, with monks living on-site. Some even work at the Abbey’s private school, which is quite popular in the area. I actually did an internship there back in the day!

Admont Abbey Library Tickets

Entrance to the library costs €19.50 per person (in 2025), which also includes access to the museum. Discounts are available, so it’s worth checking the official website for details.

The ticket includes entry to the library and the museum, but it doesn’t cover the guided tour, offered twice daily in German. For more information during your visit, I recommend the audio guide, available in multiple languages, as many museum signs are only in German.

You can’t buy tickets in advance, just get them at the entrance. Be sure to check the opening hours beforehand, as they’re limited, and the library is completely closed during the winter.

The library is part of the larger monastery museum, which features a mix of permanent and rotating exhibitions. Here’s what you can explore:

  • Natural History Museum: A collection showcasing local wildlife, fossils, and geological exhibits from the surrounding Gesäuse National Park.
  • Modern Art Museum: A surprising contrast to the historic setting, this museum displays contemporary works by both Austrian and international artists.
  • Art History Museum: Dive into the rich art collection of the monastery, featuring religious artwork, sculptures, and paintings from various centuries.
  • Multimedia Rooms: There are interactive exhibit rooms. My favorite is the Mirror Room, where you see yourself reflected hundreds of times, with a screen that creates a globe-like illusion. It’s so cool, even if the audio is only in German!

And don’t miss the stunning abbey church and monastery grounds, which are free to visit and well worth the time!

Final Thoughts: Is the Admont Library Worth Visiting?

I’ll be honest, the Admont abbey library price of €19.50 per person is a bit steep and Admont is a bit out of the way. But the Admont Abbey Library is truly breathtaking, making it well worth the visit.

Some even claim it inspired the library in Beauty and the Beast (though there’s no proof), but either way, it’s easily one of the most beautiful libraries I’ve ever seen!

And while Admont is a small town, there are plenty of other great things to do in Admont that make the trip even more worthwhile.
