Top Things to Do in Admont: Home to the Famous Abbey Library
The main reason people visit the town of Admont in Austria is to see the stunning Abbey Library, which is often named one of the most beautiful libraries in the world!
I’ve spent a LOT of time in Admont as my sister lives in this town. And while there aren’t a ton of attractions in Admont, there are still a few gems worth exploring.
In this post, I’ll share all the top things to do in Admont Austria, from the famous Abbey Library to lesser-known spots only locals know about.
1. Visit the Abbey Library

Admont’s Abbey Library is easily the town’s most famous attraction, it’s not just the the world biggest cloister library, it’s also one of the most beautiful. With its baroque architecture, impressive ceiling, and thousands of ancient books, it’s a must-see.
When I first walked through the library doors I was speechless, it’s just so beautiful.
However, its opening hours are limited. The library is open daily during summer, with reduced hours and fewer days in the shoulder seasons. In winter, the Abbey Library is completely closed. Check the official website for the latest hours.
2. Explore the Abbey and Its Garden

When you visit the Abbey Library, admission also includes access to the Abbey Museum, so you might as well take some time to explore. Inside, you’ll find historic books, religious art, a natural history section, and even a contemporary art exhibit.
Also, don’t miss having a look inside the Abbey church. The church is stunning, with intricate baroque details that add to the Abbey’s overall charm. It’s a quiet space that invites reflection and is absolutely worth visiting.
After exploring indoors, take a stroll through the Abbey gardens. The peaceful setting is ideal for some relaxation. I especially love the pond, where you can usually find some swans.
3. Explore the National Park Gesäuse

Admont is located inside the National Park Gesäuse, a must-visit for nature lovers. With its dramatic mountains, rushing rivers, and lush forests, the park offers endless opportunities for hiking, wildlife spotting, and outdoor adventures.
The National Park hosts various events throughout the year. From art exhibits and photography workshops to a guided tours by a national park ranger, there’s always something happening.
To find out what’s happening during your visit, be sure to check the official National Park Gesäuse website for the latest events and activities.
4. Go Hiking or Skiing

Admont is a great base for outdoor activities, no matter the season. In summer and early autumn, the surrounding area offers some of the best hiking in the region, with options ranging from easy scenic walks to challenging hikes and climbing routes.
Always make sure to check the difficulty of the route before setting off – never attempt a hike beyond your skill level, as it can be dangerous. And don’t forget to wear appropriate footwear!
In winter, skiing is also an option, but to be honest, the nearest ski area, Kaiserau, is quite small. If you’re an experienced skier, it might be a bit boring. But it’s perfect for beginners who want to try skiing without the crowds and pressure of larger resorts.
5. Drink a Local Soft Drink

If you’ll ask any local they’ll tell you that Café Stockhammer is the best place in Admont for some cake and a coffee. Unfortunately, they don’t have any vegan cakes, so I usually go just for a traditional soft-drink from the area.
Gesäuseperle is the local soft drink, they have different delicious flavours. I really like blueberry!
The staff wears traditional Austrian clothing which adds to the special atmosphere of the café.
6. Buy Locally Produced Souvenirs

For a true taste of Admont, visit Kaufdahoam, a cute shop whose name translates to “buy at home.” It offers a range of locally made products, from food items like wine and jams to beautifully crafted dishes and home goods.
It’s the perfect spot for a unique gift or a special souvenir, as this shop supports local artisans.
7. Cool Off Your Feet in a Clear Stream

One of the best local tips I got from my sister, who lives in Admont, is to take a stroll to the Eßlingbach, a crystal-clear stream just a few minutes from the town center.
It’s the perfect spot to relax and cool off your feet after a day of exploring, especially on warm days. It’s so peaceful and refreshing.
Where to Stay in Admont
Hotel Spirodom is the most famous hotel in Admont. It’s located just a short walk from the Abbey, and it offers a blend of modern comfort and scenic views of the surrounding mountains.
One of the standout features of the Spirodom is its wellness area, which includes a sauna and a relaxation room with panoramic views – perfect for relaxing after a day of hiking or exploring.
