Eisenstadt Day Trip from Vienna: How to Plan Your Visit

Looking for an easy day trip from Vienna that’s a bit off the typical tourist path? Eisenstadt is a great choice.

It’s the smallest of Austria’s state capitals and feels more like a charming small town than a city. The star attraction is the stunning Esterházy Palace, but you’ll also find a beautiful park, a few quirky hidden gems, and a relaxed atmosphere.

I live in Vienna and visited Eisenstadt on a day trip myself, it’s such an easy journey. It takes just over an hour by train or bus, and you can easily see the highlights in a day.

In this post, I’ll show you exactly how to get there and share my suggested itinerary to help you make the most of your day trip to Eisenstadt.

How to Get from Vienna to Eisenstadt

Getting to Eisenstadt from Vienna is very easy, it’s one of the easiest day trips you can do by public transport.

You have two good options: bus or train. Both take just over an hour, and both are comfortable and straightforward.

By Train

  • Direct trains leave from Wien Hauptbahnhof (main train station) about once per hour.
  • Tickets need to be purchased in advance, either online or at the station.
  • The train arrives at Eisenstadt Bahnhof (train station), about a 15-minute walk from the city centre and Esterházy Palace.

By Bus

  • Bus number 120 or 210 from Wien Hauptbahnhof (Vienna main train station).
  • Buses go about every half hour during the day
  • Tickets can be purchased directly from the driver.
  • The bus stops at several convenient places in Eisenstadt:
    • Eisenstadt Oberberg (near Bergkirche)
    • Eisenstadt Esterházystraße (near Esterházy Palace)
    • Eisenstadt Domplatz (right in the city centre)
  • The bus is especially convenient if you want to get straight to the main sights.

My Recommendation

I recommend taking the bus and getting off at Eisenstadt Oberberg. From there, you can start exploring right away, this saves you a bit of extra walking compared to arriving by train.

On my own day trip, I took the train, but afterwards I realised the bus would have been the easier option, that’s what I’ll do next time!

Tip: Check current bus and train times here. (Google Maps doesn’t always show all the available connections.) There are also routes with changes, but the direct options are frequent enough, and much easier, so stick with them

Day Trip Itinerary

You can easily see the highlights of Eisenstadt in one relaxed day. Here’s the order I’d recommend, based on the things I enjoyed most.

Start at Bergkirche

If you take the bus to Eisenstadt Oberberg, you’ll arrive right in front of Bergkirche, a great place to start your day.

The main entrance is at the back of the church (not at the front chapel). The main church is free to visit, definitely go inside and look up at the incredible ceiling fresco.

I also recommend to buy a ticket to visit the Kalvarienberg (entrance behind the altar). This was one of my highlights! You’ll climb through cave-like passageways and end up on the roof, with great views of Eisenstadt.

Visit Esterházy Palace

From Bergkirche, it’s a 9 min walk to Esterházy Palace, the main attraction in Eisenstadt.

The palace rooms are absolutely beautiful (some of them even rival Schönbrunn Palace in Vienna). Don’t miss the Haydnsaal, one of the most famous concert halls in the world.

You can also visit the Joseph Haydn exhibition (which I really liked), and if you’re curious, take a look at the Wine Museum in the cellars.

Tip: I’ve written a full post about visiting Esterházy Palace if you want more details!

Lunch at Altes Backhaus

My delicious vegan lunch

After visiting the palace, walk down Hauptstraße (about 5 minutes) to Altes Backhaus for lunch. That’s where I went on my day trip and I really enjoyed my meal.

They offer a daily changing menu, and there’s always a vegan option. When I visited, I had a vegan wrap that was really fresh and tasty. They also serve vegan cakes, just check the cake display inside, it’s clearly labeled.

It’s a nice, casual place to take a break before continuing your day.

Stroll through the old town

Charming narrow street in Eisenstadt lined with quaint shops and cafes, featuring a colorful piñata hanging above and a small table with a white chair on the left side.
Matthias Marckhl Gasse

After lunch, take some time to wander through Eisenstadt’s small but charming old town.

Right next to Altes Backhaus, you’ll see City Hall (Rathaus), don’t miss its beautiful facade. From there, I recommend walking over to Matthias-Marckhl-Gasse, a pretty little alley with small shops and cafés.

If you’d like, you can also stop by St. Martin’s Cathedral. It’s optional, the church itself is quite simple, so it’s not a must-see, but I really liked the colourful tilted windows.

Visit Haydn-Haus

Entrance to Haydn-Haus in Eisenstadt, with cobbled pathway under a vaulted archway and two playful cutouts of composer Joseph Haydn welcoming visitors.
Entrance to Haydn House

Next, head to Haydn-Haus, the former home of composer Joseph Haydn.

It’s a small but very well-presented museum, with original furnishings and exhibits about Haydn’s life and work. It ties in nicely if you’ve already seen the Haydnsaal at the palace.

End the day at Schlosspark

Finish your day with a relaxing walk in Schlosspark.

The park is much larger than you might expect, with a great mix of manicured gardens and wilder, more natural areas.

Don’t miss the highlights inside the park:

  • Orangery Palace: with its cool herb and vegetable beds in front of the building (unfortunately, you can’t go inside)
  • Schlossteich and Leopoldinentempel: The most picturesque spot in the park. Keep your eyes open, I saw some turtles in the lake!

Tip for your return: I recommend taking the bus back from Esterházystraße, this stop is right next to the palace and saves you extra walking. Just be sure to check the bus times ahead and give yourself a little extra time to find the stop.

I definitely think so! Eisenstadt is small enough that you can easily see all the top sights in one relaxed day, without feeling rushed.

It’s a refreshing change of pace from busy Vienna, and between the stunning Esterházy Palace, Bergkirche, Schlosspark, and the charming old town, there’s more to discover here than you might expect.
